The association continues its activities as a group of artists
comprising KURT INGERL, HAROLD and HILDEGARD JOOS, BRIGITTA MALCHE, OSKAR PUTZ and
SABINE WEIGER, which began in 1976, in order to provide constructivist thought
and design in Austria with a suitable platform together with the art historian DIETER
BOGNER.

Konstruktive Kunst in Österreich
[CONSTRUCTIVE ART IN AUSTRIA]

Constructivist artists investigate and visualize the conditions and
consequences of the ‘freedom in the law’. Their creative intention aims at the
design of harmonious, distinctive formal individualities, which are the result
of a rationally comprehensible association of shape/colour and rule. In this
mutual relationship of visual reality and abstract law, the old artistic
problem of form and content continues in an altered form. The diversity of
achievements in finding and trialling such organizational systems or in
investigating elementary formal laws makes it appear necessary to gain an
overview by collecting and organizing in order to arrive at a deeper insight
into the conditions and possibilities of structural thought and design by means
of comparative analysis.

In the publication, the lectures from the symposium Theorie und
Praxis der konstruktiven Kunst heute are published (with the exception of
the Rietveld lecture by FRITS BLESS) and the artistic approaches in the
exhibition introduced. In addition, it includes for the first time an essay by DIETER
BOGNER about the composer JOSEPH MATTHIAS HAUER, ‘Der Komponist J. M. Hauer –
Anfänge systematisch-serieller Gestaltung in Musik und bildender Kunst’.
